Created in Jouy-en-Josas in 1759 by the manufacturer Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf in the commune of Jouy-en-Josas (Yvelines),
Toile de Jouy is a white cotton canvas characterized by country scenes. The designs are most often monochrome on an ecru or bistre background but can be available in many colors. Sometimes, the colors are reversed, that is to say that we can have ecru or bistre designs on colored backgrounds. This article is inspired by a toile de Jouy entitled "La chasse à courre". Horse riding was one of the rare pleasures that Oberkampf allowed himself. During his escapades in the surroundings of Jouy, he sometimes came across the impressive retinue of the king hunting, which inspired the manufacture to create these hunting scenes.
