Painted around 1506, the Madonna del Cardellino is an early work by the painter, datable to the time of his stay in Florence. Its title is due to the presence of a goldfinch (cardellino) depicted in the painting. According to Vasari, the painting was made in Florence for Lorenzo Nasi, a wealthy woollen cloth merchant on the occasion of his marriage to Sandra Canigiani, a lady belonging to the upper middle class of Florence. The couple lived on the steep Costa San Giorgio and on November 12, 1547, the house collapsed. "Among the rubble was found Raphael's painting, broken into seventeen pieces which were recovered and restored as best as possible."
X-ray analysis revealed that the fractures between the various pieces were consolidated with nails and sealed with new paint. Entered into the collection of Cardinal Giovan Carlo de' Medici in 1666, then to the Uffizi, the painting was again restored and this work was completed in 2008.
